Dear Friend,
Last weekend, I joined Denver’s traditional Juneteenth Parade, celebrating freedom and, another very core American ideal, equal justice for all. At a time of rising hate, this ideal is one we must hold onto.

I’ve been on the road in communities across Colorado to continue spreading the good – defending our freedoms and fighting for equality.
Earlier this year, the Living Water Christian Center was attacked by someone using a Molotov cocktail [[link removed]] , causing major damage and threatening their spiritual community. I recently joined Pastor Thomas Mayes to pray for their community.
And just a few months ago, I joined the Steamboat Team to disrupt Anti Semitism and Discrimination, or STAND. This group began in response to rising hate-based vandalism in Steamboat Springs [[link removed]] , including the burning of a swastika into a picnic bench.
At all of these events, I thought about the words from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.:
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that.
Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
I also thought about a critical credo of the No Place for Hate Coalition we joined as a founding member—“hate against any of us represents hate against all of us.” I spoke about this very challenge, and rising hate, in my address [[link removed]] last fall at the Babi Yar Memorial Service.
At that address, I quoted my grandmother, an amazing woman who survived the Holocaust, on her persistence in her belief that we can overcome hate. As I said, she was steadfast in her belief that hope defeats evil - “if you hold onto hope, nothing is truly lost.” Amen.
Phil
