Personal thoughts Father Figures I thought I might step away from the usual subjects this week and write about something heavy on my heart—the importance of fathers. Greetings, As I write this column, it is Father’s Day, and I have been reflecting for days about my own wonderful father and another very important father figure in my life. My daddy, Tommy Brankley, was a tobacco farmer and the hardest-working man I have ever known. He taught me the value of having a good work ethic, humility, and always putting God first. He was rarely home, working long hours providing for my mom and five children in the fields. Sundays were always for church, family, and a good long nap (another love I got from my dad!) One of the things my dad always told me that I recall regularly is that when troubles come my way, I should remember that our time here on this Earth is just a blink of an eye compared to the amazing eternity we will have with God in Heaven. I can often hear him saying this to me even now on bad days. At a young age, my dad would take me to the local Republican meetings and introduced me to the values and beliefs of the party I still hold today. He served for sixteen years on the Mecklenburg Board of Supervisors and taught me the importance of local government. During this time, my dad introduced me to the next important father figure in my life, Frank Ruff. I have always struggled with whether I consider Frank a father figure, a brother, a friend, a mentor, or a colleague. I guess the answer is all of the above. I know I can always turn to him for the same kind of advice my father would have given me, as they are so much alike. My dad was quiet, humble, and wise – just like Frank. But when they do speak – you better listen! They both raised their children by their actions, without many words needing to be spoken. Like me and my siblings, Frank’s children thrive because of their respect for him as a father, a husband, and a person. I have known Frank most of my life. When I was in my early 20’s with two small children and living a not-so-easy life, he saw something in me I didn’t see in myself. He believed in me, and he offered me opportunities throughout my lifetime that I would never have had without his complete confidence and trust. We have always made a great team in our various work relationships and in life as the best of friends. I have been blessed by growing up and being influenced by two of the most honorable men on Earth. They don’t make many men like Tommy Brankley and Frank Ruff anymore. I am just beyond thankful to God every day for them both. Thank you for letting me share some personal thoughts this week.
