Last night, the President of the United States fired the man responsible
for leading an investigation into the President of the United States.

There have been plenty of reasons since January 20th to wake up feeling
angry or scared at the latest news from the Trump administration. But
what Donald Trump did last night represents a uniquely dangerous threat
to American democracy. It's up to each and every one of us to hold him
accountable:

There's no question about why Trump did it -- this was a transparent
attempt to undermine the investigation into the Trump campaign's
collusion with Russia to swing the election in Trump's favor. It was done
at Trump's personal direction together with an attorney general who has
already had to remove himself from anything having to do with the Russia
investigation.

This is not the first time Trump has fired a Justice Department official
who posed a threat to him. He fired Sally Yates when she refused to
enforce a Muslim ban which she knew to be unconstitutional. He fired
U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara right after Bharara's office received a
request to investigate Trump's conflicts of interest.

The only other President in American history to fire the official
investigating him was Richard Nixon. Just like Nixon, Donald Trump must
be held responsible.

Right now, that means there must be an independent investigation led by
