For some Iranians, the death of hard-line president Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash last month was cause for celebration: for years, Raisi had presided over violent crackdowns on perceived dissent and upheld the absolute authority of the regime. 

President Raisi’s death comes against a backdrop of internal challenges for the Iranian regime, including the continued reverberations of a large-scale protest movement following the death of Jina Mahsa Amini. No matter how the future unfolds, the international community must be unwavering in its support for the Iranian people as they continue their fight for freedom and democracy.
