Hi John,

June 19 marks an important day in our American history: the day the last community of enslaved African Americans finally walked free in 1865. Though the Emancipation Proclamation was two years old and the Civil War had ended weeks earlier, freedom from slavery wasn’t fully realized until that day.

I think there's an important lesson there. Freedom isn’t won by words on paper. Progress doesn’t come all at once. We must work tirelessly to secure and advance those freedoms granted us, and we must remember none are free until all are free.

Even now, nearly 160 years later, our Black neighbors are fighting for equality that, on paper, should have been theirs generations ago.

Systemic injustice in our economic and justice systems. Voter suppression and racial gerrymandering. Inequality of opportunity. All these things are still reality for our communities of color, and we must continue working to end them every day.

I won’t pretend these problems will be fixed with a single law or in a single election, but I will say that this upcoming election has the chance to mark another step forward. In this election, we have an opportunity to stem the rising tide of hate, bigotry, and regressive policies that threatens to drag us all backwards.

So John, I’ll end this Juneteenth message with a simple request: If you’re committed to fighting for equality and defeating the hateful ideology of MAGA, please contribute tonight to help me turn North Carolina blue in November.

Juneteenth is a day to celebrate freedom and progress. I hope that when we come together again next June 19th, we’ll have even more to celebrate than we do today.

Happy Juneteenth,
Wiley
