John, it’s Aaron Rouse –
Juneteenth marks the day when enslaved people in Texas finally found out they were free. The Emancipation Proclamation had already been enacted, but the news did not reach Texas until two years later.
Today, we recognize this moment and the strength and hope of a people, against all odds, who overcame and our continued fight for equality and justice.
Despite our progress toward achieving equality for Black Americans, the realities of systemic racism in our justice system, public schools, housing, and even our elections, continue to hold us back and remind us of the work that remains.
Racism didn’t end with the abolition of slavery. Instead, it was a monumental step in the longer struggle for equal justice for all.
Whether on the fields of Gettysburg or the streets of Selma, Black Americans risked and lost their lives with the hope of securing a better world for their children. The impact of their bravery will continue to echo through our history and inspire generations to come.
