The work to achieve full racial justice and equality continues, John.
159 years ago today, Union soldiers informed the last enslaved people in Galveston, Texas of their freedom — some two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation.
And though it’s only been a federal holiday since 2021, Juneteenth is a significant day celebrating the liberation and freedom of Black Americans in what has become known as our country’s second ‘Independence Day.’
But as we celebrate today, we must remember and recognize how the Black community continues to make a way out of no way, overcoming trials and structural hurdles that have remained in place to defer true justice and equality.
The importance of celebrating Juneteenth, then, like now, recognizes the ongoing fight for equality, accountability and moreover to laud Black resilience and achievements while continuing to aid in the preservation of the narratives and moments in time that have advanced racial justice since June 19, 1865.
We hope you’re able to join us today to celebrate the progress that we’ve made and reflect on the challenges ahead.
Happy Juneteenth,
