[link removed] [[link removed]] Today is Juneteenth, friend.
On this day 159 years ago, the last enslaved people in Texas received the news they had been waiting for — they were finally free.
Juneteenth, or Freedom Day, marks a joyful celebration of Black culture, freedom, liberty, and justice, however late it came.
But as we celebrate today, we must also reflect on the wounds slavery has left on our collective consciousness.
Decades after abolition, my family fled the racial terrors faced in Mississippi to the West Coast, only to find discriminatory systems designed to disenfranchise right here in California.
To this day, entire communities remain underserved, disproportionately incarcerated, and denied equal access to opportunities in our County. Our systems are still hurting people.
So while we celebrate Juneteenth this year, let’s commit to healing these wounds. Let’s work to build a County where all People can thrive.
Let’s continue doing this work together until all San Diegans can rejoice in true, lasting freedom, liberty, and dignity.
Happy Juneteenth!
