Friend, As the mayor of the former capital of the Confederacy, Juneteenth holds significant meaning to me. We’ve made a lot of progress in this country, but it’s beyond imperative that we remember our history. And do so accurately. It wasn’t that long ago that a man that looked like me would have been in chains to be bought and sold. And when I took office as Mayor of Richmond, we still had monuments paying tribute to that time in our City.
Juneteenth is a celebration of the emancipation of slavery in our country. Together we must continue the fight towards a future where all men and women are not only created equal, but treated equal. Happy Juneteenth! |
