Fellow Young Democrat,

As the grandson of a Texas native, Juneteenth holds special meaning for this Hoosier.

It’s been well over 70 years since my Nanny, along with her parents, uprooted their lives to start anew in Indiana—Gary, to be exact. With them, they carried the memories, traditions, and reminders of the importance of Juneteenth, resolved to continue the work and hope of a more just and equitable society.

While it has been 70 years since Nanny and family first called Indiana home, it was well over 80 years before that when the first of our ancestors, being some of the last enslaved people in the Deep South, received word of their FREEDOM.

In their memory, and in the memory of all our ancestors who have given some ounce of their life toward this “more perfect Union,” let us celebrate Freedom for All and continue the fight for Justice for All!

Happy Juneteenth, Hoosiers!

-James L. Wells
