Friend, today we celebrate Juneteenth — the day when the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, were informed of their freedom on June 19, 1865. It is a celebration of independence, justice, and joy. But it also comes with the recognition that Black Americans continue to face inequality. Friend, freedom requires sustained action and a renewed commitment to equality. Holidays like Juneteenth serve as reminders for us to reflect on history and progress but also to continue the fight onward. Because all Americans deserve the protection of equal rights. From disparities in our justice system, to healthcare access, there is much more work to be done to ensure Black communities can rightfully thrive in every walk of life. That’s exactly my commitment while in Congress: I will always advocate for the justice, peace, and equity that Black Americans deserve. Happy Juneteenth, team! — Eric |
