Friends,
On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, bringing the
news of freedom to the last remaining enslaved African Americans, more than two
years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. This day, now known as
Juneteenth, is recognized as a federal holiday and a powerful symbol of
liberty, resilience, and the ongoing fight for equality.
Today is important because we can honor the significant contributions of
African Americans throughout our nation's history, but we can also acknowledge
the long journey toward freedom and justice that continues today.
Our strength lies in our diversity, and our future depends on our commitment
to ensuring that every person, regardless of race, has the opportunity to live
freely and thrive.
In Washington, I will protect voting rights, push for criminal justice reform,
and vote to invest in educational and economic policies that build a more
equitable economy.
Juneteenth is more than a celebration of freedom; it is a call to action. It
reminds us that the fight for equality is far from over and that we must strive
for a society where everyone is treated with dignity and respect. With that in
mind, I wish you a good Juneteenth.
Thank you,
John Padora
