Friend -

Today we commemorate Juneteenth, a day of remembrance and a celebration of freedom for Black Americans across the country.

On June 19th, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, Union soldiers marched into Galveston Bay, Texas, to declare that all formerly enslaved people had been legally freed. Those newly freed people began working to transform their country: reuniting with their families, establishing schools, and fighting for the rights they were denied even once no longer enslaved.

In the spirit of that fight, Senate Democrats have continued their work on racial justice in the pursuit of a Washington where everyone can live and thrive. Our Senators continue to take action by making record investments addressing the housing affordability crisis, increasing support for public and special education, and making our communities safer through gun violence prevention.

On this anniversary of a momentous day in history, we recommit to our promise to build a more equitable community in Washington, and look forward to the work left ahead of us.
