June 19th is a day of defiance, freedom deferred — and joy.

On this day 159 years ago, Union troops informed enslaved people in
Galveston, TX of their freedom — more than two years after the
Emancipation Proclamation.

As we celebrate our newest federal holiday, it’s important that we
remember and renew our commitment to ensuring full racial justice and
equality.

That means ending the war on drugs — which has disproportionately targeted
Black Americans — protecting voting rights, ending police violence,
supporting public education, guaranteeing healthcare, and teaching our
children the truth about our history.

Today, we’re doubling down on our mission to move forward and make bold
progress in guaranteeing racial justice and equality, no matter the
obstacles politicians like Ted Cruz throw our way.
