I am incredibly proud to have been an original cosponsor of legislation to recognize Juneteenth as a federal holiday.

However, while this recognition was a significant and symbolic step, we must also continue to acknowledge the struggle Black Americans face against systemic racism, even more than a century after being recognized as full citizens.

True justice requires us to fully grapple with the injustices of our country’s history, including the ongoing assaults on Black Americans’ right to vote. Now is the time to recommit ourselves to this critical work and to ensure that our nation lives up to its promise of liberty and justice for all.

Let us use this day not only to celebrate freedom but also to renew our dedication to the ongoing fight for equality and justice.
