Happy Juneteenth! Today is not only a day of celebration but also a time for reflection. It is a time to recognize how far we have come and how far we have to go. On June 19, 1865, only 159 years ago, the last enslaved people in Texas got the news that they were free. Since then, generations before us have fought tooth and nail for desegregation, voting rights, equal treatment, and so much more. This day is a reminder of the resilience of the Black community. Every day, I am inspired and motivated by the drive of those who came before me with even more obstacles to face. Shirley Chisholm, John Lewis, and Sojourner Truth, just to name a few. Their courage paved the way for progress, and it is essential for us to drive that progress forward each and every day. More than a celebration of freedom, Juneteenth is a reminder that we have to actively work towards dismantling racism and injustice in our society as well as advocate for policies that promote inclusion and equity. As we honor and celebrate Juneteenth, let us all remember that the fight for freedom, equality, and inclusion must continue. Happy Juneteenth! Emilia Sykes
