Juneteenth National Independence Day is an extraordinary milestone in the fight for equality, marking a momentous event in American history. For too long, crucial lessons about this day have been left out of history books, but now they will be taught to upcoming generations of leaders in classrooms across the country.  

On Juneteenth, let's take a moment to reflect on the rich history and enduring spirit of resilience within the African American community. Also known as Freedom Day, Juneteenth reminds us of the indomitable human spirit and the relentless pursuit of justice and equality. 

As we continue our mission for equality and justice, join me in honoring the tremendous progress we have made. Let's celebrate this Juneteenth National Independence Day and remain committed to the fight for a brighter, more equitable future for everyone!

The first African-American woman in Wisconsin history to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives, Congresswoman Gwen Moore, took her official oath of office on

January 4, 2005. She served in the Wisconsin State Senate from 1993-2004. Before her

election to the Senate, Congresswoman Moore served two consecutive terms in the

Wisconsin State Assembly from 1989-92.
