Dear friend,

Juneteenth marks a pivotal day in American history, commemorating the moment in 1865 when the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, finally learned of President Lincoln’s groundbreaking proclamation that “all persons held as slaves” within the rebellious states “are, and henceforward shall be free.”

The celebration of this day, sometimes called Emancipation Day or Freedom Day, became a tradition embraced by Black Americans across the country. Now celebrated federally each year, Juneteenth serves as a profound reminder of the resilience and triumph of the human spirit in the face of oppression.

However, this day also serves as a reminder of our past failure to uphold the promise of freedom and justice for all. So today, let us not only celebrate the incredible progress we have made towards fulfilling that promise, but also recognize the important work that still lies ahead.

While we’ve made a lot of progress, Black Americans still suffer from distinct disparities in health, education, employment, and other critical areas, and their freedoms like the freedom to vote continue to be targeted. So whether it’s closing the education gap, addressing the maternal mortality crisis, reforming the criminal justice system, or protecting the right to vote, we have a lot more work to do to create a more perfect union.

It won’t be easy, but I know we can overcome these challenges and achieve a future that truly guarantees liberty and justice for all – and I pledge to continue fighting every day in Congress to make that future come to fruition.

Happy Juneteenth,

Lori Trahan
