*MADISON, Wis.* ? The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resouces (DNR) invites the public to attend the 65th anniversary celebration of the George W. Mead Wildlife Area [ [link removed] ] in Milladore from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on June 22, 2024.

The event is hosted by the Friends of Mead and McMillan Wildlife Areas.?

Nestled in the valley of the Little Eau Pleine River, the George W. Mead Wildlife Area contains over 33,000 acres of wetlands, forests and grasslands.

Stanton Mead gifted 20,000 acres of land to the state of Wisconsin to be used as a wildlife refuge in 1959. The land was named after his father, George W. Mead.

In 2005, an education and visitor center was built and named after Stanton Mead. Both serve as an epicenter of wildlife and environmental education for Wisconsinites and their guests.?

The celebration will kick off with a coffee social at the Visitor Center Classroom (9-10 a.m.), and visitors are welcome to branch off to one of the other activities going on throughout the day.

There will be wildlife viewing at the Smokey Hill Road Observation Deck, arts and crafts in the Visitor Center, a DNR equipment showcase just outside of the visitor center and guided hikes across the wildlife area property.

The event is free and open to the public.?
