In addition to Black Music Month and Juneteenth, June marks the one-year anniversary of Victor Blackwell uncovering his genealogy. Last year, CNN aired Victor’s experience with the International African American Museum in Charleston, South Carolina, where he worked with a genealogist to trace his family’s lineage back to not only slavery, but also their fight for freedom. This vastly personal and emotional moment underscored Victor and CNN’s commitment to honoring freedom and legacy. This commitment continues this year during CNN’s third annual special "Juneteenth: Celebrating Freedom and Legacy". Join CNN’s Victor Blackwell for a night of interviews and performances by John Legend, Patti LaBelle, Smokey Robinson and so much more.
How did you prepare to shoot for ‘Juneteenth: Celebrating Freedom and Legacy’?
I prepared for the special by reading the subjects' recent interviews, watching their conversations, and crafting questions that might show us more than what we saw in previous interviews.
Favorite moment from filming the special?
Hands down: My favorite moment was speaking with Ms. Opal Lee on the day she was honored with the Medal of Freedom. She was especially jubilant. She was laughing and telling these amazing stories. In her mid-90s, she has so many plans for her future. She's an inspiration and example that it's never too late to make a difference.
What should the audience expect from the special this year?
Expect good music and insightful interviews. I think you'll learn something about each of these stars that you didn't know - I certainly did.
How are you honoring Juneteenth aside from the special?
I'll take a moment to express gratitude for both the ancestors who fought for and won their freedom - and the ancestors who suffered and survived. I'll also make a donation to my alma mater, Howard University.
