JOHN,

Today is Juneteenth, a day to commemorate when the last enslaved Black Americans were informed of their freedom in Galveston, Texas – a full two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.

2024 will mark the first year that Juneteenth is recognized as an official state holiday here in Rhode Island, despite having been a federal holiday for three years. This is an important step to acknowledge our past and highlight the progress we've made toward creating a more equal and just world. There is still work to be done.

Celebrating Juneteenth this year – and every year – It is a reminder of how hard we’ve worked to ensure that all Americans will have their rights respected – and how much farther we still have to go. Let’s reflect today on our past and continue working towards a better future — ensuring that we are an accepting and fair nation, advocating for each and every American.

Thank you,

Seth
