Dear John,
Yesterday's White House announcement [[link removed]] has rightly drawn cheers from PIF partners and throughout the movement for immigrant rights and equity. By eliminating a barrier to lawful immigration, the Biden initiative will provide stability and eventual access to the benefits of citizenship for hundreds of thousands of people. No less importantly, this reform allows our country to benefit more fully from the contributions people who have worked, learned, raised families, and made homes across the country.
Each of us weaves a unique experience and history into the fabric of our nation’s culture. Perhaps more than any other month, June illustrates that tapestry’s richness. This month includes Juneteenth [[link removed]] , World Refugee Day [[link removed]] , the anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark Plyler v. Doe [[link removed]] decision, and of course June is Pride Month [[link removed]] .
With all of the urgent threats demanding our attention, it can be hard to make a moment for celebration. But these observances are also remembrances. They remind us that the fight for equity, inclusion, and acceptance began long before us. That we walk in the footsteps of giants like Opal Lee [[link removed]] , Tom Lantos [[link removed]] , Lidia and Jose Lopez [[link removed]] , and Lilli Vincenz [[link removed]] . And that like them, we must persevere until we build a country worthy of our shared heritage.

Our partners at the Tennessee Immigrant & Refugee Rights Coalition (TIRRC) recently released an exciting resource: Transformative Conversations: Nine Insights from Deep Canvassing to Foster Empathy, Counter Bias, & Strengthen Democracy [[link removed]] . The toolkit is informed by six years of organizing campaigns and conversations with local voters, and it shares key insights to tap the power of deep canvassing. TIRRC has used this two-way conversational technique – based on story sharing, empathy, and connection – to move people away from bias and towards better understanding of complex policy issues and support for social progress.
