bethanyforde.com [bethanyforde.com] John,

Three years ago, President Biden signed the bill to make Juneteenth a federal holiday – ensuring that we recognize not only the end of slavery in our nation but also the resilience of freedom fighters in the face of powerful oppression.

Today, I’m reflecting on the challenges that remain in the efforts to empower Black communities – and I am reaffirming my commitment to true freedom and equality for all.

Being a nurse and an educator has given me a front-row seat to how social determinants of health – the social and economic factors that affect a person’s well being – disadvantage Black families. Despite accounting for only 28% of live births, Black women in Delaware represent 78% of pregnancy-related deaths. Closing these racial disparities is a TOP priority for me.

Addressing critical issues affecting mothers and babies throughout their lives is key to that effort. And as your next Governor, I will work tirelessly and collaboratively with local leaders and community advocates to make Delaware the best place to live, work, and raise a family for all.

This Juneteenth, let us reflect on the history of slavery in our nation and do our part to educate ourselves and others on the work left to be done.

Onwards,
Bethany Hall-Long
