John, Happy Juneteenth! This holiday marks a critical time in our country’s history as it commemorates an end to slavery.
On June 19th, 1865, over 250,000 enslaved individuals received the news of their emancipation. Although President Lincoln had announced the Emancipation Proclamation in 1862, it took two years for the news to reach them in Galveston, Texas.
Juneteenth (also known as “Freedom Day” or “Emancipation Day”) became a federal holiday a few years ago when President Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act. And last year, Gov. Lamont announced that Juneteenth would be observed as a state holiday.
If you’ve never celebrated Juneteenth before, we encourage you to see what opportunities there are in your community! Our very own CT Dems Black Caucus is hosting a Juneteenth Celebration from 12:00-3:00 pm at 80 Proof American Kitchen & Bar in New Haven today.
Let’s use today as an opportunity to listen to Black voices, reflecting on the meaning behind this important holiday, and celebrate the diversity of our state. On behalf of your CT Dems, have a wonderful Juneteenth celebration!
Sincerely,
Adrienne Billings-Smith Vice Chair |
