Today is Juneteenth, a day to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States.

As we celebrate and honor this critical moment in history, we must also recognize the long-standing inequities that still exist today in Maryland and across the country.

From my practice as an attorney to working as a Delegate in the General Assembly to my time now leading the Office of the Comptroller, I have always been committed to building a better Maryland for everyone, no matter how they identify or where they come from.

Governor Moore took a significant step this week when he pardoned 175,000 misdemeanor convictions for marijuana possession. The Governor’s action demonstrates a keen understanding of the moral imperative of righting decades of wrong-headed policies and the economic imperative: low-level convictions often result in a lifetime of negative consequences.

I stand with all Marylanders who are dedicated to working in partnership to build a more equitable and just future for all.
