John,

I want to take a moment to commemorate the 159th anniversary of Juneteenth. Today, I'm reflecting on how in 1865, word made it to Galveston, Texas, that slavery had officially ended. I'm also thinking about how much progress has been made towards the fight for civil rights and racial equality.

In particular, I'm thinking about my great-great grandfather: Robert Smalls.

As a ship pilot, he risked everything by sailing himself and several other enslaved Black Americans to freedom during the Civil War. He later came back and served as Congressman here in South Carolina to make meaningful change – the same seat I'm running to represent.

Although we've made big strides since 1865, there is so much more to do — from protecting voting rights to defending the accurate retelling of Black history in our schools.

If elected representative, you can count on me to continue making progress on these fronts.

That's why I have to ask, John: Could you spare any amount today to help our campaign win in November? I can't take on this fight without you. [[link removed]]

Let's keep up the good fight for liberty and justice for all, and celebrate those who helped end slavery here in the United States.
