Dear John,
As we gather to celebrate Juneteenth, Community Justice reflects on the significance of this historic day and recommit ourselves to the ongoing struggle for justice. Juneteenth marks the emancipation of the last enslaved Africans in the United States, a powerful reminder of the resilience and strength of Black communities.
This Juneteenth, however, our celebration is overshadowed by a tragic event. A mass shooting at Round Rock’s Juneteenth festival in Texas, a day meant for celebration, was marked by tragedy and loss, leaving two dead and fourteen injured. The victims, innocent bystanders, lost their lives simply for attending a community celebration.

Black Americans should not have to live in fear of an altercation turning deadly. It’s far past time that elected officials and city leaders invest in data-backed community violence intervention solutions like violence interruption programs, conflict mediators, life coaching, and street outreach that are proven to prevent conflicts from escalating and save lives.
The recent tragedy underscores what thousands of American families already know – gun violence, even when interpersonal, has devastating consequences that ripple beyond those directly involved. Community Justice will not stop fighting for solutions that address the root causes of violence and hold our elected officials accountable for keeping us safe.
Your support is crucial in our fight against gun violence. This Juneteenth, we invite you to stand with us and take action.
In light of Sunday’s incident, our partners at Life Anew will be hosting a gathering for the community to heal at the Harvest Trauma Recovery Center today , June 19 @ 12 PM CST . The address is 6633 Hwy 290E, Suite 308, Austin, TX, 78723.
