Juneteenth is America’s second Independence Day.
It marks the date, June 19, 1865, when a quarter million enslaved Black people in the westernmost Confederate state, Texas, were informed by arriving Union troops that they were indeed free. After 246 years—and two years after the Emancipation Proclamation—slavery had at last come to an end.
But the struggle for full and equal rights goes on, from the streets to the workplace to the polling place. Since the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act in 2013, many states with a history of discrimination have imposed voter-suppression tactics that target Black communities and cause reduced voter turnout, diluted representation and the continuation of a system rigged against Black people.
Racism remains a fact of life in America. So this Wednesday is a good time to remember the lesson of the original Juneteenth: keep hoping and keep fighting, even—especially—when times are hard.
