Dear JOHN, This week, we honor Juneteenth. On this day, 159 years ago, nearly two years after President Lincoln emancipated enslaved Africans in America, troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas with news of freedom. More than 250,000 freed slaves were able to embrace freedom with this executive decree that we now recognize as Juneteenth or Freedom Day. It’s important that we recognize Juneteenth as it commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and celebrates the freedom of enslaved African Americans. | How do you plan to honor Juneteenth? Taking this survey will sign you up for future news and updates from my office. | I recently hosted a Juneteenth Commemoration for my constituents. I also presented a $3.5 million community project funding check to the Southern Queens Park Association, NYC’s only Black-run Park. The federal funding will create ‘The Goodrich Legacy Center,’ which will provide workforce development and entrepreneurship resources for youth in the district. To learn more about the Juneteenth event, visit here. | I also provided a congressional recognition to Jeffrey A. Coker, a maintenance supervisor at SQPA, for his longtime service. | As always, if you have questions or need assistance on federal matters. Don’t hesitate to visit my website. Enjoy the rest of your week and we’ll be in touch soon! | Gregory W. Meeks Member of Congress | Sign up for my newsletter to get updates on this issue and others! | Washington D.C.
