Dear Friend of MCV,

I just got back from an inspiring day in Augusta at the quarterly meeting of the Maine Climate Council – a gathering of climate activists, government officials, environmental justice representatives, and scientific experts working towards a brighter climate future for Maine.

In 2020, Maine launched its first Climate Action plan: Maine Won’t Wait . [1] Now, nearly four years later, it’s time to track the state’s progress towards the goals set in 2020 – and update the plan with the overarching goal of meeting the climate crisis at the scale that science and justice demand.

This meeting marked an important inflection point in the Climate Council’s work – a moment to pass the baton in the long relay race of climate action. The Climate Council’s six sector-specific working groups and several cross-cutting issue groups have been carrying the baton for the last few months, developing their recommendations for the next phase of the plan. Now the Climate Council will integrate each group’s recommendations – and public feedback – into a coordinated climate advocacy effort. Read those recommendations here. [[link removed]]

Finally, the updated Climate Action Plan will be available in December. That’s when we cross this finish line as a team – and begin the work of implementing Maine’s next four year plan for climate action!

Some themes that emerged today included intersectionality, resilience, and hope. A brighter future is within reach – and it takes all of us.

What do you want to see in Maine's updated Climate Action Plan? In the coming weeks and months, you'll have the opportunity to give feedback on the working group recommendations. Look out for more guidance from us on the ways to do that!

More soon,
