John, last week, I wrote a piece for the Chicago Sun-Times, calling on President Biden to take executive action toward comprehensive immigration reform.

Today, President Biden proved he could be the president we elected by providing relief to thousands of mixed families, like mine, and Dreamers like my husband, Boris.

John, it's a common misconception that the second that an undocumented person marries a US citizen, they automatically become a US citizen — but that's simply not the case.

However, President Biden's most recent executive actions do two things:

1️⃣ They carve out a clearer pathway toward permanent citizenship for undocumented spouses or children of US citizens.

2️⃣ It allows Dreamers, like my husband, to obtain employment-based visas quicker than they would before.

John, as the only member of Congress in a mixed status household, the work to keep families and communities together is deeply personal.

And while it's not an exaggeration to say that this is the most significant policy change for immigrants and their families since DACA was launched in 2012, this does not mean the work is over.

I'm ready to build on this historic win by continuing to advocate for urgent relief to the broader immigrant community, protecting asylum, and expanding pathways to citizenship. It is clear that voices like mine make a difference and are desperately needed in Congress and that is why I am focused on making sure we win in November.
