| Friend, California has been on the forefront of LGBTQ+ rights for decades, but we continue to see right-wing threats to our progress across parts of the state, especially with the targeting of trans people and communities. It's time to ask Congress to step up and protect trans communities in California and the nation by passing the Transgender Bill of Rights. Lives are at stake, and most states don't have the leadership and courage that we do in California to stand in the face of dangerous, transphobic attacks. Let's reaffirm our nation's bedrock commitment to equality and justice for all. Will you sign our coalition petition calling on Congress to pass the Transgender Bill of Rights?
2023 saw a record number of anti-trans bills introduced in state legislatures, and 84 of those bills were passed into law. This spike in anti-trans policy is directly correlated with a rise in anti-trans violence.(1) For instance, 25-year old Michelle Henry was a mentor to teens at the San Francisco LBGT Center youth program, and was known as a "ray of light" by the center's executive director. And in May, the young transgender woman was murdered in a hate crime, the 15th reported transgender murder in California this year.(2) By passing the Transgender Bill of Rights, we would codify the rights of transgender and nonbinary individuals across the country, expand gender-affirming health care, invest in mental health services specifically for the community, and enhance programs to keep those most vulnerable safe and protected from violence. The Transgender Bill of Rights works to build a future country we all want and deserve--a place where everyone is accepted and cared for. This month of Pride, we must stand up for our transgender brothers and sisters. Please call on Congress to pass the Transgender Bill of Rights!
