I was 23, living in DC and getting involved in protest movements after Mike Brown was murdered at the hands of police. I met so many incredible organizers at that time, people who had a clear vision for a just world and who were charting a path for us to get there together. I wanted so much to be a part of it, to take part in something bigger than myself. AND, I was holding back, hiding parts of my story that had to do with class. How was I working at a fellowship that paid 17k a year? I graduated from college without debt and didn’t have loan payments. How could I afford the most expensive room in our group house? With money from my college graduation checks.
My secrecy and shame around class was preventing me from deepening relationships with my friendships and political work, and I was ready to change that.
So I joined a Resource Generation Praxis group—6 months of political education and personal development where I told someone else how much money I, and my family, had for the first time. Then I led a praxis group, and watched new people make big commitments, push each other, and relax into a more authentic version of themselves. Finally, our chapter took part in RG’s National Tax Campaign and we learned to power map city council, testify, and build coalitions to work across class to win higher taxes on the wealthy.
Joining the RG Chapter taught me to tell the truth about who I am, to fundraise my people in a way that brings them closer, and work across differences to win improvements in all of our lives. It gave me the community, political education and skill to find an appropriate relationship to my own power and to take action—joyfully, publicly, to truly feel a part of something bigger than myself.
That is what we’re inviting you into. If you’re ready, I’ll see you at RG 101 on June 24th at 7 pm ET and at our Housing Campaign Launch on June 27th at 7 pm ET.
Looking forward to it,
Nora
