Mann.House.Gov In the Office Fighting for Border Security Since President Biden took office, illegal immigration has flooded across our nation's borders. Last week, I took to the House Floor to urge President Biden to stop treating our nation's border security as a political game. House Republicans urged President Biden to work with us to secure the border, but instead the Biden Administration has been laser focused on overturning President Trump’s policies that actually worked. House Republicans wrote the strongest border security bill that has been passed in this Congress, H.R. 2, and the White House met us with silence. President Biden, wake up. Your policies are failing. Americans know that President Biden's border gimmick is nothing more than political theater, and they will not stand for it. It's time for the Biden Administration to support H.R. 2 and secure the border for good. Supporting Haskell Indian Nations University Last week, I led my colleagues in sending a letter to the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) and Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) regarding Haskell Indian Nations University. Located in Lawrence, Kansas, Haskell is the only Tribal university with an entirely indigenous population and is dedicated to serving its students, as it has for the past 139 years. Haskell is one of two postsecondary institutions operating under the governance of BIE, and therefore relies on BIE to ensure the campus is able to operate and serve its student population. This letter requests that DOI and BIA address the infrastructure needs of the school, examine faculty and staff retention, review the quality of student life, and prioritize curriculum and athletic program funding. Haskell is a one-of-a-kind, historic, and invaluable institution. In order to continue to serve the educational needs of Indian Country, these agencies must prioritize the preservation and growth of Haskell Indian Nations University. Click here to view the full text of the letter. Meetings in the Office Xcel Achievement Last week, I spoke with students from the Xcel Achievement Group before their tour of the U.S. Capitol. Xcel helps teens plan their future, develop relationships and soft skills, and grow in their faith. I enjoyed hearing about what the group had planned for their trip, and what they learned during their visit. Thank you for meeting with me during your time in our nation’s capital! City of Dodge City Local governments play a critical role in ensuring that our communities and local economies can thrive. I was happy to meet with leaders from Dodge City and hear about the initiatives they are working on to improve their community. It is an honor to represent Dodge City in Congress, and I am appreciative of their local leaders for taking the time to meet with me while visiting Washington, D.C. Kansas Building Industry Association The Kansas Building Industry Association (KBIA) supports homebuilders and firms across Kansas. Last week, we discussed barriers that the industry is facing like burdensome regulations implemented by the Biden Administration, workforce shortages, and inflationary prices and supply chain issues on materials that continue to threaten affordable housing. I am thankful for KBIA and their advocacy efforts on behalf of the housing industry in our state. Salina Vortex Corporation I enjoyed meeting with Salina Vortex Corporation last week. Salina Vortex Corporation is a global engineering and manufacturing company specializing in process gates, diverter valves, and dustless loading solutions for dry bulk solids like grain and minerals. During our meeting, I learned more about the work Vortex is doing to grow jobs and retain talent in Salina, and how Congress can help by eliminating business crushing policies like the estate tax and supporting career and technical education. Thank you, Salina Vortex, for the work you do to enhance manufacturing across the United States. Associated Equipment Distributors Last week, I met with Berry Companies Inc. representing Associated Equipment Distributors (AED) during their visit to Washington, D.C. Berry Companies is a family-owned company, headquartered in Kansas, that sells, rents, and supports the distribution of equipment to contractors, governmental agencies, and other companies in construction and agriculture. I appreciated hearing their perspective about extending much needed tax relief to small and medium sized businesses in rural areas. Several tax relief policies from the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act are set to expire at the end of 2025. Extending these pro-growth standards for asset intensive industries is critical for continued job growth and business success. Garden City Area Chamber of Commerce Last week, I met with members of the Garden City Area Chamber of Commerce who are working to better their community and ensure that every resident can thrive. During our meeting, we discussed the current improvement projects happening in Garden City, and ways that Congress can help. Thank you, Chamber members, for the important work you do to support economic activity in our local communities. Crop Insurance Professionals Association The uncertainty of today's economic climate coupled with Mother Nature's volatility, highlights the importance of effective risk management tools for American farmers, ranchers, and agricultural producers. The Crop Insurance Professionals Association (CIPA), a national organization of insurance agents, works to strengthen federal crop insurance for all producer customers. I appreciated meeting with CIPA during their visit to Washington, D.C. Kansas farmers, ranchers, and agricultural producers understand the critical role crop insurance plays in protecting their livelihoods. I will not stop fighting to pass a Farm Bill that maintains and strengthens crop insurance and gives our farmers, ranchers, and agricultural producers certainty as they work to feed, fuel, and clothe the world. Thank you, CIPA, for the important role that you play in advancing American agriculture. Congressional Hunger Center - Legacy Leaders No one wants people to go hungry. Last week, I met with the Congressional Hunger Center's Legacy Leaders. The Congressional Hunger Center is a bipartisan, nonprofit organization which works with Congress to address global hunger. As the co-chair of the House Hunger Caucus, I am proud to work with the Congressional Hunger Center to recognize the role of American agriculture in the fight against hunter. I appreciated the opportunity to speak with the Congressional Hunger Center's Legacy Leaders and thank them for their role in feeding the world. Kansas FFA This week, I met with Kansas FFA Association members during their annual Washington Leadership Conference. As a co-founder of the Congressional FFA Caucus, I am proud to advocate for the next generation of leaders in food and agriculture.
