Tomorrow (Wednesday 19 June, 5pm) is the last day you can register for a postal vote for the UK general election. Almost one in five voters now use postal ballots to vote and their use has grown over the last decade.

Reform UK 2024 election 'contract': fact checked

As part of our series looking at party manifestos we’ve been fact checking claims made in the Reform UK manifesto, or ‘contract’, revealed on 17 June.

We have analysed claims made in several areas, including policing, crime, and Labour's immigration policy.

We're looking at seven parties' manifestos in full during the election and scrutinising them for misleading or inaccurate claims.

Is unemployment always higher after a Labour government?

In multiple interviews on 17 June defence secretary Grant Shapps claimed “every Labour government in history” has left unemployment higher.

This isn’t the first time Mr Shapps has made this claim—we fact checked him last year after he said the same thing.

On Sky News’s Sunday Morning with Trevor Phillips, Labour’s shadow health secretary Wes Streeting twice mentioned “the 7.5 million” on NHS waiting lists.

This is a familiar claim we’ve fact checked previously, and is not what the data shows.

Stand up for honesty and accuracy during this election

Our new research has found that 61% of people think there is more lying and misuse of facts in politics and media in the UK than there was five years ago.

This depressing finding underlines why Full Fact campaigns for change. Good information really matters in a healthy democracy, and it's never been more important to campaign for honesty and accuracy in politics, and in wider public debate.

The next government and parliament must ensure that democracy is protected, politicians lead by example, and society’s resilience to misinformation is strengthened. But we can’t do this alone - we need your help!
