Hi james,
Much of the uncertainty around the upcoming election revolves around the question of whether or not voters will show up to support President Biden against Trump’s MAGA fascism. A not inconsiderate portion of our would-be coalition is still on the fence. These individuals, largely young and progressive, are unconvinced that Biden deserves their vote, with much of their trepidation tied up in the president’s handling of the Israel/Gaza conflict.

On the other side we have Democrats who are listening to Trump’s increasingly authoritarian rhetoric and correctly surmising that this could be our final democratic election if he manages to claw his way back into the White House. If we’re going to save this country, these two factions have to unite before November — an objective that is obviously ill-served by browbeating, insulting, and criticizing. If we want to convince people to vote for Biden, we’re far better off making the case— and it’s a simple one.
This election is not about punishing Biden for perceived failures or policy disagreements. This election is about choosing the kind of country that we want to live in in the future. If Republicans win and get the chance to implement Project 2025, we’ll witness a right-wing transformation of this country that’ll make the Ronald Reagan years look like a New Deal utopia.

Under a second Trump presidency, abortion and contraception rights will be shredded. Access to IVF treatments will be gutted. Conservatives on the Supreme Court have already voiced interest in repealing same sex marriage and given what they did with Roe, we can assume that they’ll follow through. On top of that, Trump will likely end up replacing Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito with much younger and even more radical reactionary ideologues, cementing control over the court for generations to come.
If we lose this election, the federal government will go back to treating climate change like a hoax. Economically disastrous tax cuts will rain down on the super rich and corporations while everyone else struggles to make ends meet amid stagnant wages and underfunded social programs. Guns will become even more ubiquitous and “voting rights” will become nothing more than a punchline told at Heritage Foundation cocktail parties.
DACA recipients will be deported en masse and jack-booted MAGA stormtroopers will drag millions of undocumented immigrants from their homes. The human suffering that’ll be inflicted on our society’s most marginalized groups is impossible to articulate. It’s the kind of horror you just have to see to fully comprehend — and see it we will if Trump triumphs.
None of this is to say that reelecting President Biden will solve all of America’s problems. Biden himself wouldn’t make that claim (although he is the most progressive president in modern history). Instead, keeping him in power moves us towards a future where equality, prosperity, and stability are the norm. Biden represents a firm push towards forming a more perfect union, towards gradually transforming this country into the kind of place where future generations can flourish. You don’t have to love Biden to vote for him, you just have to love your country.
Stay focused, stay energized.

PRE-ORDER “SHAMELESS”
I’ve written my first book, titled “Shameless.” The book lays bare the long con of the Republican Party, illuminating the dangers of the ever-widening gulf between the vaunted Republican brand and their actual behavior; how the media has proven itself a willful participant in this farce; and how Democrats can rebalance the political landscape. Featuring insights from Jen Psaki, Pete Buttigieg, among others, and with a foreword by Jamie Raskin, Shameless will be essential reading as we head toward November. DON'T BE A MITCH FUND
The "Don't Be A Mitch" campaign is back after a hugely successful 2022 cycle, having raised $1.2 million for voter registration groups ahead of the midterm elections. This year, with a tough Senate map, we have no room for error. I put together a list of organizations from 5 key states (Montana, Ohio, Arizona, Wisconsin, and Missouri) that I think are best situated to ensure that the Senate stays in Democrats' hands. Any amount helps!
