[1]U.S. Senator Chris Murphy

I’m outraged by the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the federal rule from ATF to ban bump stocks.

It will cost lives. Full stop.

Justice Sotomayor’s dissent made the outcome of this crystal clear, “The majority puts machine guns back in civilian hands.”

There is no reason civilians need a semi-automatic rifle to fire more rapidly unless they want to shoot and kill as many people as quickly as possible. The tragedy in Las Vegas in 2017 remains the deadliest mass shooting in history because of bump stocks.

After Las Vegas, Democrats pushed for legislation to ban bump stocks because we knew that doing so through executive action would likely face legal challenges and eventually be struck down by Donald Trump’s radical, right-wing court.

This month’s ruling by the right-wing politicians in robes on the Supreme Court is another reminder of the stakes this fall. If Trump and Republicans take back the White House and Senate, they will once again start packing the courts with right-wing ideologues who will carry out their agenda.

The only way to ban these devices for good is through congressional action, and if Republicans are serious about keeping our communities safe, they’ll work with Democrats to pass a bill immediately.

I’m going to get to work in the coming days to see if I can find the support in the Senate to pass legislation banning bump stocks. I’m ready to work with anyone — no matter their political party — who is willing to come to the table to help us get this done.

Every best wish,

Chris Murphy

Chris is up for re-election, and he is counting on our movement to ensure we have the resources to hold this seat and elect a gun-safety majority. There’s no one the gun lobby would rather beat in November.

If you can afford it, please consider making a donation today. Small-dollar donations help Chris keep his time fundraising to a minimum so he can focus on the work we expect him to do.
