Dear John,
Today, President Biden announced a program that will support undocumented spouses of U.S. citizens to work and remain in the country, providing a possible pathway to legal status and citizenship for potentially 550,000 people.
Building off existing authorities, this process of ‘parole in place’ will apply to undocumented spouses of U.S. citizens who have lived continuously in the country for at least 10 years and meet other eligibility requirements. Their children will also qualify for this program if they are below 21 years of age and meet other eligibility requirements.
Additionally, the president included in his announcement a more streamlined process for DACA recipients and DREAMers who have graduated from an American university to apply for work visas.
The actions President Biden took today show common sense decisions can be made to help thousands of people who have built lives here for decades, despite the inactions of Congress. Not only will America’s workforce strengthen, but also American families made up of DACA recipients, DREAMers, and long-settled immigrants will have the ability to live without the fear of separation due to immigration status.
The Biden Administration needs to continue to build off of this historic announcement and create an America where every family who calls this country home has the opportunity to stay together and thrive.
The NYIC will keep up the fight for immigrant rights as we celebrate this mighty step for immigrant rights throughout the country!
