Juneteenth celebrates the end of slavery in the U.S. as issued by President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. In 2021, it became our newest national holiday.
“On June 19, 1865—months after the Civil War ended and more than 2 years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation freeing enslaved people—Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to free 250,000 people still held in bondage. The arrival of Major General Gordon Granger and his troops signaled that the Federal Government would not relent until the last enslaved people in America were free.”

The U.S. Census Bureau produces timely local statistics that are critical to Emergency Management [ [link removed] ], including planning, preparedness, and recovery efforts. Using publicly available and easy-to-use tools, such as My Community Explorer [ [link removed] ] OnTheMap for Emergency Management [ [link removed] ], Census Business Builder [ [link removed] ], and Community Resilience Estimates [ [link removed] ] which is the base map in My Community Explorer, the Census Bureau is able to supply hundreds of demographic and economic data variables and maps to emergency planners and the public. The 2022 American Community Survey estimated there were 1.3M same-sex couple households in the U.S., and of them, 58% (740,523) were married couples.

“Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) Pride Month is currently celebrated each year in the month of June to honor the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan. The Stonewall Uprising was a tipping point for the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States. In the United States the last Sunday in June was initially celebrated as ‘Gay Pride Day,’ but the actual day was flexible. In major cities across the nation the ‘day’ soon grew to encompass a month-long series of events. Today, celebrations include pride parades, picnics, parties, workshops, symposia and concerts, and LGBTQ Pride Month events attract millions of participants around the world. Memorials are held during this month for those members of the community who have been lost to hate crimes or HIV/AIDS. The purpose of the commemorative month is to recognize the impact that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals have had on history locally, nationally, and internationally.”
