In 2004 I finally said “Enough!”
For years, I had worked in the corporate financial planning world where profits came before people.
I turned in my notice, rented a small office in downtown Rochester and opened my own financial planning firm, where I could focus on doing the right thing for clients –- putting their interests first. My friends thought I was crazy! But I carried on, starting with a folding table and a phone book and built my company into one of the largest woman owned financial planning firms in Michigan.
It wasn’t always easy – just as my practice was growing, the Great Recession hit. Overnight, people were losing their jobs and even their homes. I spent many nights counseling people on how to get out of debt, how to save their home, how to rebuild their savings.
And now I am running for Congress. Not because I want to go on some cable news show and become famous, but because I want to take my deep knowledge of how reckless policies in Washington can impact everyday people's lives.
Right now, Congress is being influenced by lobbyists and billionaires who have no idea what it is like to live paycheck to paycheck, not have health insurance, or not be able to retire because you haven’t been able to save enough money.
It is time to send a true financial planner to Congress. Someone who has a deep understanding of how the system works and the compassion needed to ensure that we create a system that works for everyone, not just the rich and powerful.
