As the kickoff of our Bright Blue Summer Tour, it was a truly beautiful day out on the Western Slope with engaged community members and great vibes. In fact, the vibes were so good that some former Republicans joined in on the action.
Lou Villaire, a registered Republican in Mesa County for over 10 years, took up our invite and attended DemWest. Here’s what he had to say:
“My spouse, myself, and our ten-year-old daughter were fortunate to attend the Colorado DemWest event in Palisade. It was a really inspiring event. Thank you for having it.
We even got to meet Jena Griswold. Jena really inspired our daughter with her story of becoming the Colorado Secretary of State.
I just made a contribution to the 'Colorado County Comeback,' initiative and wanted to reach out to you to see how I can become more involved with this initiative here in Mesa County.
I was a registered Republican here in Mesa County for over 10 years. And I continue to work on important issues with many local Republicans here in Mesa County that I respect. But I had to leave the Republican Party in 2016 for obvious reasons, and I became a registered Independent. I want to do local work that strengthens democratic values. And I think I can do this best with the Colorado Democratic Party.”
That’s exactly why we do this work: when Democrats show up everywhere in our state, we’re able to bring more folks into the fold.
