Today the Supreme Court heard arguments in Whole Woman's Health v. Hellerstedt, a case that could walk back all the progress we've made in securing reproductive rights for women.

Samuel --

Forty-three years ago, the Supreme Court affirmed that women in this country have the constitutional right to make our own reproductive health decisions. Today, the Supreme Court heard arguments in Whole Woman's Health v. Hellerstedt, a case involving abortion restrictions in Texas that would force the majority of abortion clinics in the state to shut down.

This has the potential to be the most important abortion ruling in a generation. If the Court rules against us -- or splits 4-4 on this decision -- the state's restrictions will be upheld, not only denying many Texas women access to legal abortion services in their own state, but also cementing restrictions in other states within the Fifth Circuit and opening the door for new Texas-like restrictions in other states.

It's a tough pill to swallow that despite how far women have come on so many fronts over the last four decades, our access to reproductive health care in this country still largely depends on where we live or what we can afford.

Since 1973, the campaign to undo the progress we made in Roe v. Wade has been unrelenting. This past year alone, my Republican colleagues in the U.S. House of Representatives voted seven times to defund Planned Parenthood, threatening to deny millions of women access to safe, reliable, and affordable care. And as we saw all too viscerally in the horrific armed attack on a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs in November, physical and psychological assaults on providers are creating a climate of fear and hostility, attempting to deter women from getting the care to which they are entitled.

In the past five years, states have passed more than 280 abortion restrictions, forcing closures of clinics and creating real barriers to women's ability to access safe and affordable reproductive health care. Shutting down or cutting funding for places like Planned Parenthood will only increase the number of unplanned pregnancies and the need for abortions -- whether they're legal or not.

The reproductive rights of women in America are at risk. Plain and simple. And Samuel, we are one election away from turning back the clock even further.

It's up to us to fight as hard as we ever have to elect leaders who understand what's at stake. Add your name if you're ready to do the work it takes to stand against Republican extremism in 2016:

When I think about the world I want our daughters to live in, it's one where their rights are inviolable and their independence is valued. It's a moral outrage when legislatures full of male politicians interfere in women's health care decisions. Today the Court will weigh in on whether we will continue down this dangerous road, but it's up to us in November to make sure we don't allow women's reproductive freedom to be threatened any further.
