Friend -
Last week, we shared with you the Detroit Free Press’s endorsement of our campaign in the Democratic primary.
But they also made a recommendation in the Republican primary, and we want to make sure you see it, because it’s more evidence that the Republican primary for Senate will be messy all the way through the primary election in August.
In a major blow to Trump-endorsed former Congressman Mike Rogers, the Free Press recommended that GOP primary voters select former Representative Justin Amash over Rogers.
Here’s the money quote:
"Rogers’ transactional approach to politics, his ideological inconsistency and obeisance to former President Donald Trump render him a poor fit for this Senate seat."
In other words, Michigan’s largest newspaper is calling Rogers out on abandoning his principles and doing anything (and everything) in pursuit of personal power.
They point out that Rogers cultivated a reputation for bipartisanship in Congress and forcefully criticized Donald Trump in 2016 and 2020, particularly around his attempts to overturn the 2020 election.
Not only has he since embraced Donald Trump, a move the Free Press describes as "hardly a profile in courage, and squandering whatever bipartisan bona fides he once claimed," but now refuses to answer on whether Joe Biden won the 2020 election. That alone, the Free Press says, "would render Rogers unfit to serve."
In summary:
"We detected little consistency among Rogers’ political positions — but had no trouble concluding that the former congressman has learned all too well how to read the political room, a transactional approach to ideology that may well win him the primary.
But in a U.S. Senator, we’re looking for principles."
With this notable endorsement for Amash, and Sandy Pensler continuing to spend big on TV attacking Rogers, it’s clear this primary is far from over.
While Republicans fight amongst themselves, we’re implementing a plan aimed at winning the general election in November. We’re hard at work growing our field campaign and meeting voters across the state. We’re also airing TV ads in several media markets introducing Elissa to new voters, and we’ve already heard from a lot of voters who saw it and were excited about Elissa’s message.
