Over half the U.S. population will face dangerous heat this week as a massive heatwave brings record-breaking temperatures:

• Cities like Chicago, St. Louis, Detroit, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, New York City, and Boston are expected to face life-threatening heat.
• A wildfire in Los Angeles County has burned more than 14,600 acres and forced the evacuation of about 1,200 people.
• Dangerous air quality will also hit the East Coast because of wildfires lasting for several days.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency is the country's main disaster response agency. FEMA can classify extreme heat and wildfire smoke as major disasters, unlocking federal support — including financial support — for resource-strapped neighborhoods, cities, counties, and states.

The resulting funds could help build life-saving cooling centers for people who can't keep their homes cool, install indoor air-filtration systems to keep out toxic smoke and break the cycle of fossil-fueled disasters with rooftop and community solar systems.
