Do assault weapons designed to kill people on battlefields really need to be even more lethal? No, no, NO!

Even the NRA agreed bump stocks, a device that can be connected to a gun to initiate a continuous firing cycle with a single pull of the trigger, should be banned. [1]

In a 6-3 decision, the conservative majority on the U.S. Supreme Court has just struck down a critically important federal ban on bump stocks on the grounds that it’s up to Congress to mandate such bans. [2] Bump stocks are devices that can be connected to guns to enable them to fire 400-800 bullets a minute, effectively turning them into machine guns.

These devices must be banned.

In 2017, a man with bump stocks attached to his assault rifles looked down from an upper story hotel window and shot into the Harvest Music Festival in Las Vegas, killing 60 people and injuring 400 more in a matter of minutes. It was the worst mass shooting in U.S. history. [3] It was so horrible that in the aftermath, the Trump administration banned bump stocks with NRA support.

With more firearms than people in our country, we are drowning in a sea of guns. Guns are everywhere. There are currently 25 million assault weapons in circulation, [4] all of which could be turned into automatic machine guns with bump stocks. Guns are why our country’s rates of gun violence are among the highest in the world, [5] and why our families and communities have lost our safety and lost our freedoms. Gun violence is now the leading cause of child death. [6]

By paving the way for assault weapons to be even more lethal, the conservative majority on the U.S. Supreme Court has shown us once again that they prioritize guns over our Constitutional rights to life, liberty from violence, and the pursuit of happiness absent from fear. In this instance, Congress has the opportunity to rectify that immediately.
