Ever since the fifth grade, Mikie knew she wanted to serve her country just like her grandfather — a B-24 bomber pilot during World War II.

It took guts for Mikie to chase her dream and graduate from the Naval Academy in the first-ever class of women eligible to serve in certain combat roles.

It took guts to be a leader — flying the H-3 Sea King in missions throughout Europe and the Middle East.

When the moment demanded leaders like Mikie, it took guts for her to run for NJ-11 — a seat that hadn’t been held by a Democrat in decades. She weathered all the attacks and outside spending that came her way, and won.
