When it comes to the Texas Senate race, my friend Colin Allred is the only candidate we can count on to protect our freedom.
That’s why today I’m asking you to split a contribution between Colin’s campaign and mine.
Last week, I met with fellow Texan Lauren Miller, who was in Washington to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee about her experience arising from Texas’ abortion ban. A plaintiff in the Zurawski v. State of Texas case challenging the Texas abortion ban, Lauren was hospitalized and diagnosed with a condition posing significant risks to her and her pregnancy, later learning that one of her twins had a condition that was threatening her other twin and her own life. But she couldn’t get the medical care she needed in Texas. Lauren has shared her story in the hope of making real policy change, and Colin and I met with her to hear about her experience and how we can help Texas women.
The Senate Judiciary Committee heard from her, too. That was the purpose of her trip. But not all of them showed up. Including her own senator. Senator Cruz, a senior member of the committee, skipped the hearing.
It is clear: We can’t trust Cruz to do the right thing when it comes to protecting access to reproductive health care or freedom. He doesn’t even listen to Texas women when they testify in his Senate committee about their experiences. We know he is not listening anywhere else.
We can’t forget that Cruz introduced an extreme federal abortion ban, or he has supported the same kind of “personhood” legislation that drove Alabama’s IVF ruling. We can’t be fooled by his purported effort to protect IVF, which leaves the door wide open for states to target certain aspects of the IVF process and doesn’t do anything to protect IVF providers from prosecution. We know that when a bill that would actually codify IVF protections came before the Senate, Cruz and Senate Republicans blocked it. And, of course, Cruz supported overturning Roe v. Wade, which has fast-tracked these efforts to take away our freedom. We can trust that Senator Cruz will continue to restrict our freedom to make our own decisions.
In contrast, we can trust Colin to listen to us, to stand up for us, and fight back for us.
Needless to say, Cruz can’t be trusted to protect reproductive freedom. He can’t even be counted on to show up and listen.
We deserve better. And we can have it. If we elect Colin Allred. He and I will be working from now to November to make sure he is representing Texas next year in the Senate. To help us, will you split a contribution between Colin’s campaign and mine here?
There is a lot we need to do in Texas to turn things around. This year, one thing we can do is get a new Senator. And I am going to do all I can to make it happen. I hope you will, too.
Together, we can do anything,
