Friend —

The implosion of private-equity backed Steward Health Care has brought uncertainty for hundreds of thousands of Bay Staters who rely on their hospitals in the Commonwealth for care and for the thousands of health providers – doctors and nurses – who work at Steward-owned hospitals.

As chair of the Senate Subcommittee on Primary Health and Retirement Security, Ed has been working for months now to seek accountability for Steward’s gross mismanagement.

But when Ed hosted a congressional hearing on the issue last month, Steward’s CEO was a no-show. Just a month later, they filed for bankruptcy — putting the entire Massachusetts healthcare system at risk.

Since this crisis unfolded, Ed has been working with Governor Healey, the Biden Administration, and his fellow Senators to ensure nobody in Massachusetts loses access to the care they need.

But beyond the Steward crisis, Ed has continued to put forward legislation that would put guardrails on corporate greed in health care. It would require transparency, hold private equity accountable, and protect patients, providers, and workers, and guarantee health care for all.

For too long our healthcare system has been bought up by those who put investor profit over people’s lives and livelihoods. Those who seek to make a quick buck rather than provide the best care possible for all who need it.

It's our job to come together as a nation and make sure what is happening in Massachusetts can never happen again.

In solidarity,

Team Markey
