GOOD AFTERNOON & welcome to my update no.274

Just 17 days until the election and lots happening - including of course Fathers Day and an England victory over Serbia (we won’t mention Scotland). Postal votes in Guildford Borough Council have started landing on doorsteps so I got totally rain sodden delivering eve-of-poll letters in Shalford for which a delicious sausage roll from the Snooty Fox was my reward. I have several more public meetings coming up so if you have not yet been able to come to one and are still undecided as to how you will vote, please do join me - including Godalming tonight at 7 in the Baptist Church.

WESTMINSTER NEWS

‘THEY’RE ALL THE SAME…’ ERR NO Both main parties talk about economic growth being the answer to all our troubles but how will they actually deliver it? Both Rachel Reeves for Labour and me for the Conservatives submitted articles for the FT to answer that question ([link removed]) which are worth a read because they set out the differences more clearly than anywhere else I have seen. Labour promise ‘stability’ but I argue that isn’t enough. We agree on planning reform but what about labour supply? Post Brexit you have to be able to say where companies will find their new workers from. My answer is welfare reform, childcare to help young parents and pension tax reforms so people don’t feel the need to retire early. Labour’s strategy means they are telling us as little as possible - but for a party ahead in the polls I just don’t think that is good enough.

EVEN MORE TAXING? This morning I spoke to a pensioner in Elstead concerned about tax rises. No party opposed the Covid and cost of living support so the issue is not really that taxes went up - but who wants to bring them back down again. Labour and the LibDems both plan to raise taxes further - but I worry that would slow down our economic recovery as I talked about in this interview with the Sun done at Secretts cafe in Milford ([link removed]) . But if you want to bring down taxes you have to be able to explain your vision for public services - and for me that is about more efficiency, starting with the NHS to which I gave £3.4 bn for to improve productivity ([link removed]) in the Budget.

My plan for Godalming and Ash - to deliver and equip the new world leading Cancer Surgical Innovation Centre at the Royal Surrey

WHAT’S GOING ON LOCALLY

THIS MORNING IN GODALMING AND ELSTEAD 4951 steps this morning walking around Primrose Ridge in Godalming and Springfield in Elstead (Cranleigh still to come). Issues on the doorstep included immigration, NHS care and economic growth. There was excitement about the new Community Diagnostic Centre opening in Milford. On migration there was lots of discussion about whether the Rwanda scheme would actually work (I think it will - but if not, what’s the alternative?). In Elstead I also inspected the newly painted pedestrian crossing on the Milford Road which Pat Murphy showed me a couple of months ago and I have managed to get Surrey to repaint and replace a faulty bulb.

Having a strong local MP makes the difference!

COMPTON PUBLIC MEETING Whoever would think a small village would pack its village hall for an old fashioned public meeting in an election campaign? I had a fantastic reception on Friday in Compton, with a huge attendance of over 90 people. We had a lively Q & A about numerous issues including including tax, the economy, climate change, traffic and Ukraine. As you know I fully support residents' concerns about speeding and dangerous driving in Compton - and if elected will campaign hard to get the much needed speed cameras. I still have many more of these meetings organised so if you have not yet decided how you will vote, please do come along to one of the following:
* Godalming Baptist Church tonight (7pm)
* Alfold Village Hall Tues 18th (7.30pm)
* Victoria Hall Ash Mon 24th (7.30pm)
* Hambledon Village Hall Sun 30th (7pm).

Join me at one of my remaining public meetings

HUSTINGS I have mixed feelings about hustings, having done them over many years. I find they can be more about point scoring than a properly thoughtful discussion as we tend to have in the public meetings. However for those who like that format, I am doing three as below:
* Cranleigh Village Hall Thurs 27th (7pm)– link here ([link removed]) .
* St Mary’s Church in Shalford Fri 28th (7pm).
* Baptist Church in Godalming Sun 30th (3pm).

BRAMLEY FUEL LEAK UPDATE I have recently received a rather unsatisfactory reply from the MD of Asda Express, Chris Walker, which you can read here ([link removed]) . There is still a huge amount of clean-up work to be done and many people are uneasy about the petrol station reopening until there is a clear plan in place – not least because just last Friday the fuel smell and petrol bubbles returned after Thames Water hit a main. I also got a reply from the Environment Agency about potential prosecutions in which they say they can’t divulge the progress in current investigations - but here’s hoping for a result. I will keep on the case, of course with Cllr Jane Austin.

JOIN THE FUN! Team Jeremy has lots of volunteers and we are enjoying the campaign! Indoors, outdoors, whatever takes your fancy – if you would like to help our effort we would love to see you! Just email [email protected] (mailto:[email protected]) . If you would like more regular updates of my work locally and nationally, do follow me on Facebook ([link removed]) , X (Twitter) ([link removed]) , WhatsApp ([link removed]) or Instagram ([link removed]) . Our posters are also starting to go up all over the patch ([link removed]) . If you would be happy to put one up in your garden or indeed in your window, please do email me – any help is so appreciated.

AND FINALLY… It turns out that there is gold in Godalming and Ash ([link removed]) – you just have to Hunt for it!
