A MESSAGE FROM ASSISTANT ATTORNEY GENERAL AMY L. SOLOMON
I recently had the opportunity to roll out OJP's new mission statement [ [link removed] ] to an audience of stakeholders working to support community safety and equal justice. The events – one organized by the Square One Project and the other in partnership with the Public Welfare Foundation – highlighted the tremendous possibilities in a bold reimagining of public safety in America.
Over the last three years, OJP has strengthened its support for communities, and I'm proud that our new mission statement memorializes our commitment “to provide resources, leadership and solutions to advance community safety, build community trust and strengthen the community's role as co-producer of safety and justice.”
OJP is making substantial investments in community-centered strategies, and as we celebrate LGBTQI+ Pride Month [ [link removed]. ] and gear up for this week's Juneteenth commemoration, we are reminded of what's at stake in our work to realize a more just and equitable nation. Hate crimes against LGBTQI+ individuals are on the rise, and despite some progress, Black Americans remain significantly overrepresented in our criminal and juvenile justice systems and among victims of gun violence.
AAG Amy Solomon
We have so much more work to do, but by investing in communities as co-producers of safety and justice, we are addressing the barriers and biases that have restricted opportunity and held back the potential of too many people in this country. In this issue of the newsletter, you will read about some of the work we are doing to support our community partners.
Thank you, and Happy Pride!
*Amy L. Solomon

PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT
BJA Hate Crimes Training [ [link removed] ]
The Hate Crimes Training and Technical Assistance Program [ [link removed] ], funded by BJA, is a crucial OJP initiative aimed at enhancing the nation's capacity to combat hate crimes. It offers resources, technical assistance and project management guidance to law enforcement, community organizations and grant recipients of the Shepard-Byrd and Community-based Hate Crimes Programs. Launched in 2021, the Shepard-Byrd Hate Crimes Program [ [link removed] ] provides training, outreach and education to help agencies and community organizations prevent, investigate and prosecute hate crimes and assist victims.
Hate crimes are criminal acts motivated by some form of bias against a victim's race, color, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity or disability.
BJA's Hate Crimes Training and Technical Assistance Program provides invaluable resources for those dedicated to combating hate crimes nationwide. Funding and assistance for this specialized training will foster greater community collaboration and create safer, more equitable communities. The current grant solicitations [ [link removed] ] for BJA’s hate crimes programming reflect OJP's commitment to ensuring justice for all victims of hate crimes.
